Sakshi Malik ends India’s drought for a medal with a bronze

Sakshi Malik India’s daughter ended our nation’s drought for a medal at the Rio Olympic Games by clinching the Bronze medal in the 58kg category with a spirited comeback victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan.

The 23-year-old Sakshi Malik from Rohtak(Haryana) stayed back at the start of the bout.She was trailing 5-0 at the end of the first period.Then she stepped in the second,bagging eight points on the trot to beat Aisuluu and also snatch  India’s first ever Olympic medal in women’s  wrestling.

Sakshi’s victory brought cheers to the Indian contingent that had endured agonising 11 days without a medal.

Weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari (2000, Sydney), boxer MC Mary Kom (2012, London) and shuttler Saina Nehwal (2012, London) are the only other women players from India to have won a medal in the Olympics.
