Ranji Trophy: Maharashtra’s Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne Create History

Maharashtra skipper Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne broke a record for all wickets in the Ranji Trophy that stood for 69 years, an unfinished stand of 594 for Maharashtra against Delhi in a Group B match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. In 1947 Vijay Hazare and Gul Mahomed had slammed a 577-run stand for Baroda against Holkar. 

Maharashtra declared their first innings closed at 635/2, Gugale was unbeaten on a career-best 351 with 5 sixes and 37 fours off 521 balls.Bawane also on a career-best 258 runs with 2 sixes and 18 fours.Delhi replied with 21 without loss in five overs before stumps with openers Unmukht Chand (4) and Mohit Sharma (14) at the crease.

Delhi used as many as nine bowlers to break the stand between Gugale and Bawane.Gugale dropped on 38,105 and 262.If they add 30 more runs they beat the world record of a partnership of 624 set by Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.
